Murphy
Roche Irish Music Club is an organization of musicians and non musicians of all
ages and skill levels who play, want to play, or just enjoy traditional
Irish music. We serve as a meeting place bringing people together to share their
love of Irish music. Our club organizes events and helps keep our
members informed of what is happening within Irish music. If you have an
interest in Irish music, culture and heritage we encourage you to contact
us.
Members
do not need to be Irish. We draw
from a broad range of ethnicities, including Polish, Native American, Dutch,
Brazilian, and, of course, Irish. We invite you to join our club and join in our
activities.
As one of
hundreds of local branches throughout the world, we are affiliated with the international organization of Irish
Musicians - Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann - which sponsors events,
competitions, concerts, and activities throughout the year. As such,
membership in Murphy Roche Irish Music Club includes membership in this
worldwide community.

What's in a name?

Irish music clubs are usually named
in reorganization and honor of musical heroes from traditional Irish music
and culture, and
the Murphy Roche Irish Music Club is no exception. It is with great pride and a
sense of living tradition that we named our club in honor of Edmond Murphy and Pat
Roche.

Edmond Murphy
was a fiddler from
Aclare, County Sligo. After
emigrating to London as a young man, he served as treasurer of the Comhaltas
Ceoltoiri Council of Britain for 25 years. Edmond is celebrated on a Sligo
monument as one of the greatest fiddlers to come from that region of Ireland.

Pat
Roche was born on March 24, 1905 to the family of Patrick and Brigid
Roche in the small village of Doonaha, near Carrigagaholt, County Clare,
Ireland. He was one of 10 children and remembers his childhood with
helping out on the family farm, cutting turf. He danced at the crossroads
and in a local out of use creamery which had been converted into a dance
hall. His father, as well as farming the land, also ran a shop that sold
fresh baked goods. For a time his father also ran a public house but Pat
says he began to like it too well and his mother was soon to disapprove....

Events
Sessions We have a
nice friendly session. All are welcome on a drop-in basis, regardless of level
of proficiency. If you are a classically trained musician you'll be in good
company: most of our players were classically trained and are now having more
fun than they ever imagined with music. We'll work with you to develop a
traditional style.
