| The Chieftains |
It is
probably true to say that the Chieftains are the undisputed Kings of Irish
Traditional Music. Many would argue that, more than any other single
performer, they are responsible for keeping Irish Traditional Music alive
during a period when the music was in decline and not particularly
popular. Their earlier recording, simply called "Chieftains I thru Chieftains
V" and prior to their teaming up with artists from other genres, are
probably the best from an Irish Traditional music standpoint. |

The
Bothy Band |
The Bothy Band led the renaissance in Irish
traditional music in the early eighties. They might be considered a little
too modern for some traditionalists but you owe it to yourself to hear
just how dynamic and exciting Irish music can be. |

Carroll |
Chicago's own Liz Carroll is one of the
leading fiddle players around. She has several CDs but this is about as
good as it gets. Don't miss an opportunity to attend one of her workshops,
no matter what instrument you play - she is a gifted teacher. |

Review for Kathleen
Nesbitt's "Fidil"
Irish Fiddle Tutorial
"Fidil" is a terrific example of what an instructional music book should
be. It's comprehensive, yet easy for the beginner to understand. It would
be especially useful to a musician coming from the classical discipline.
She covers all the most basic yet vital areas one needs to begin taking up
fiddling. The selection of tunes Kathleen includes is particularly nice as
a play-along cd is included. I particularly was pleased to see so many
slow airs - our most expressive kind of tune!
Ceili
Bands
Ceili
bands may perhaps best reflect the sound and style of Irish Traditional music as
we imagine it might have been played
long
ago. This is the tradition we strive to keep alive today. Many gifted
and talented solo musicians have brought much
excitement
to the music and, hours of listening pleasure, but often times
commercial considerations, or the artists desire to
explore
new possibilities have diluted the tradition. Yet this experimentation and
exploitation of the elegant simplicity of Irish
music
ensures that it will survive for the listening and playing pleasure of
generations to come.
